Germany Travel Guide

Germany is filled with fairy tale towns, modern cities, lovely woodland landscapes, and magnificent castles. The country is filled with history and the landscape and cities change dramatically as you travel through the country.

Germany is one of my favorite European countries I’ve visited and there is still so much more I still want to see there.

Cost & Currency

Germany uses the euro for currency, most places accept credit cards.

Compared to other European countries, the average cost of food, drinks and accommodations in Germany is about average I’d say. It’s cheaper than expensive countries like Switzerland or Iceland, but more expensive than cheap European destination like Italy and Greece.

Safety for Solo Female Travelers

4.5 out of 5

Germany is a great destination for solo female travel. I’ve spent time in several German cities alone and taken day trips to multiple smaller towns. I’ve never had a problem and would definitely recommend it to someone new to solo travel as most people speak English and Germany is generally very friendly to travelers!

Tipping/Restaurants

Tipping is common in Germany, although it is not expected to tip as much as we generally do in the US. As a rule of thumb 5-10% is average for a sit down restaurant, and a Euro or two is customary in a café. Tipping is not an option on credit card slips, so you’ll need to tip in cash.

As is the case in most European countries, when you are finished with your meal you should ask for the bill. Servers will not just bring the check to your table, as that is considered rude.

When to Visit

Germany is one country that has something to offer for every season. Fall is popular for the favorable weather and the infamous Oktoberfest!

December offers the quintessential German Christmas markets. The rest of winter is a bit more quiet, but you can enjoy ski season, or take advantage of cheaper hotel prices and less crowded cities.

Spring is a great time to visit to avoid the summer crowds and the summer prices.

Summer is peak tourist season for most of Europe, so be prepared to pay top dollar for the ideal weather.!

Getting Around

Germany has a great rail system that makes traveling between French cities (or to neighboring countries) very convenient. High speed trains run regularly between all major cities multiple times a day

Oktoberfest

Oktoberfest in Munich truly is a bucket list experience! It’s such a great time to visit Munich and immerse yourself in German beer culture
