Switzerland Travel Guide
Impressive mountains, Swiss chalets, sweeping vistas, winter wonderlands, vibrant hillsides – Switzerland evokes so many different images for me. It’s comprised of one stunning backdrop after another, and every train or car ride I took while there offered another breathtaking view with each turn.
I’ve had the opportunity to visit Switzerland several times during different seasons and have been to a variety of different places from the stunning Alps, to charming Lucerne, to larger cities like Zurich and Lausanne & I can honestly say I’ve loved them all. I cannot recommend a trip to Switzerland enough!

Safety for Solo Female Travel: 5 out of 5
I’ve traveled extensively throughout Switzerland alone, both in larger cities and the more remote countryside and have felt extremely safe everywhere. I’ve never had an experience in Switzerland that even made me slightly uncomfortable traveling alone.
Cost & Currency:
Switzerland is expensive. Hotels, food, drinking, anything really. My last trip there was after I had spent time in Greece and Italy and Switzerland was significantly more expensive than either of those countries. T
he currency is the Swiss Franc, but most major places also except Euros. Your change will be in Francs, so I recommend getting Francs from the bank, or just using a credit card, as they’re accepted everywhere.
When to Visit Switzerland:
Given its landscape, Switzerland is stunning at any time of year. Summer is peak tourist season in Switzerland, you’ll experience the best weather, but also the most crowds and top prices.
Spring & Fall are the shoulder seasons and crowds will thin out, but the weather is still enjoyable, especially later in the spring and earlier in the fall. Also, the foliage in the fall is stunning in the Swiss Mountain towns! (Even for someone who grew up in New England and is used to beautiful fall foliage)
For skiers and winter sports enthusiasts, Winter is the ideal time to visit Switzerland, and the mountain areas will be crowded & expensive, but if you’re looking to spend some time in the cities they will be empty of tourists! Also, the Christmas markets are incredible if you visit in December!
Getting Around Switzerland:
Switzerland has a great rail system that makes getting from one major city to the other extremely easy. The trains are high speed, tend to run on time, and the same routes run many times a day, so you can be flexible with your plans!
If you’re planning on traveling around between several Swiss cities highly recommend the Swiss Pass, it’s a good way to save money, and can be used towards many other forms of transportation besides trains in Switzerland. Details can be found here
