How to get to the Giant Swing in Adelboden

Adelboden swing

Adelboden, Switzerland is hands down one of the most stunning places I’ve ever been to (and has one of my favorite hotels in the world!) It’s a small town nestled between stunning mountain ranges on all sides with endless options for exploring trails, sweeping vistas & waterfalls. One of the coolest things in Adelboden was the Giant Swing on the top of Tschentenalp. It’s free to use and not hard to get to once you’re in Adelboden! Keep reading for details on how to get to Adelboden, and then how to get to the swing once you’re in Adelboden!

Getting to Adelboden

Adelboden is not the easiest place to get to in Switzerland, but it is so worth it! If you’ve rented a car you can drive there, but the roads to get there are pretty windy and narrow, so just make sure you feel comfortable driving, particularly if you’re going to be coming or going at night! If you’re taking public transport, like me, you’ll likely need to make several connections to get to Adelboden! I was coming from Bern, but the route is similar if you’re coming from Zurich or Lucerne.

Train to Spiez

To get to Adelboden from any of the major cities in Switzerland you’ll need to get to Spiez, which is accessible by train. Coming from Bern, the train for Spiez departed about every 30 minutes, so no matter what time you’re departing form Bern you shouldn’t have to wait to long to get to Spiez. The ride takes less than 30 minutes. The vista outside of the Spiez train station is absolutely stunning and if you have any time between trains I recommend walking across the street to take in the views and snap some photos!

Train from Spiez to Frutigen

From Spiez you’ll want to take the train to Frutigen. This is a short trip, less than fifteen minutes, and is only a few stops, so make sure you’re paying attention. The train from Spiez towards Frutgen departs every 30 minutes. Also, make sure to request your stop by pressing the stop request button on any of the doors. The train usually stops in Frutigen regardless, but I like to make sure.

Bus from Frutigen to Adelboden

From Frutigen you’ll want to take the bus to Adelboden Post. The bus departs hourly from right outside the Frutigen train station. Adelboden Post is the final stop, so you can ride it all the way to the end if you’re staying in downtown Adelboden. There are a few other stops in Adeldoben, so make sure to confirm which is the closest to your hotel. The ride is about thirty minutes.

Getting to the Giant Swing

The Giant Swing is on the top of Tschentenalp, one of the many mountains surrounding Adelboden. It’s very easy to get there from the main downtown area, and you have two options for getting to the top; by cable car or on foot. It is not possible to drive there, there is some conflicting information online that make it looks possible to reach by car, but this is not the case.

I recommend trying to get there on the earlier side (or waiting until later in the afternoon/early evening) as I’ve heard the line for the swing can get long, and you want to make sure you have time to get a good picture! I took one of the first gondolas up and was there around 9AM and only saw a handful of other people up there, so I had plenty of time to get a good shot without holding anyone else up!

By Cable Car

To get there early, I decided to take the cable car to the top and hike down. The cable car is super fast, and it takes less than five minutes to make it to the top. It runs about every fifteen minutes or so all day, so you have plenty of options for getting up & down on your own schedule. The cable car station is located right in the center of Adelboden, so you can’t miss it! The exact Google maps location for directions can be found here. Once you get to the top, the swing is about a three minute walk to your right from the cable cars. It’s a mostly flat path and is easy to access! You can find the Giant Swing on Google maps here, but trust me you can’t miss it once you’re at the top!

The price list can be found here, a full price round-trip ticket will cost you 32 Swiss Francs (Switzerland is not cheap!) but if you have the Swiss Pass, you can get a discount on your trip (as well as discounts on other various forms of transportation, like trains) Also, if you go later in the afternoon, you can take advantage of the discount for “last minute” tickets, also you’ll get that Golden Hour light for your pictures!

By Foot

You also have the option to hike to the Giant Swing, it will take about 1.5-2 hours one way, depending on your pace. The full hike can be found on All Trails it’s a 5.8 mile loop that will take you to the top of Tschentenalp and right past the Giant Swing, giving you a great place to rest and grab some cool photos before continuing on your hike.

There’s also a restaurant at the top with some pretty spectacular views if you’re looking to grab lunch or a drink while you’re up there!
