Sunset from Ponte Umberto I

Ponte Umberto I

One of my absolute favorite sunset spots in Rome is the Ponte Umberto I, this infamous bridge offers epic views of the sunset over St Peter’s and the Tiber. It gets a bit crowded at sunset, but the bridge is long, so you can usually find a good spot!

Spanish Steps

Spanish Steps

Watching the sunset with a bottle of wine from Rome’s Spanish Steps is a quintessential experience for your trip to Rome. This spot will also get quite crowded, but there’s tons of space. If you’re looking for a bar or restaurant with a view, there are few spots right near the top of the Spanish steps that are also great for sunset. Two of my favorites are Cielo Terrace & Caffè Ciampini di Marco Ciampini

Janiculum Hill (Parco del Gianicolo)

For some of the best views over the entire Roman skyline, head to Janiculum Hill (Parco del Gianicolo) for sunset. This popular park/viewpoint is on the Vatican/Trastevere side of the river and offers views of both sides of Rome. This is a super popular sunset spot for both tourists and locals.

Piazza Navona

Piazza Navona is one of my favorite areas of Rome at any time of day, but it is particularly stunning around sunset/golden hour. The marble fountains are quite beautiful in the sunset glow and the entire Piazza offers stunning views. There are many restaurants with large patios that are great spots to grab a sunset aperitivo and enjoy the views.

Castelo Sant’Angelo

Rome’s Castelo Sant’Angelo is a lovely spot to catch the sunset. It offers some of Rome’s best views over the Vatican, but also the rest of Rome. The rooftop of the castle offers unobstructed views in all directions of the city. You’ll need tickets for to view the sunset from here. They also have a rooftop bar/cafe so you can grab a drink or snack while enjoying the sunset.

Terrazza del Pincio

Terrazza del Pincio is located near the Spanish Steps and Villa Borghese and offers some of the best sunset views in Rome. Overlooking Piazza del Popolo with panoramic views of St. Peter’s and the Vatican, this is a popular panoramic spot.

giardino degli aranci
Sunset from Giardino Degli Aranci

Giardino Degli Aranci

Last, but not least is Giardino Degli Aranci, popular with the locals in Rome, this park is a bit farther than some of the other places mentioned in this article, but the views do no disappoint, It’s vantage points provides views of the Colosseum, Roman Forum and the Vatican (farther in the distance)
