Pompeii Travel Guide

Pompeii is one of Italy’s largest and most impressive archaeological sites. Located south of Naples in Italy’s Campania region, Pompeii is a must see for anyone interested in history.

Pompeii was once a thriving city & in 79AD the entire city and its inhabitants were buried in the wake of a massive eruption from Mt. Vesuvius. The volcanic ash preserved the large city, and now visitors can explore the excavated cities streets, building arena’s & more.

Getting to Pompeii

Pompeii is easiest to reach from Naples, but if you’re not going that far south, it can also be visited as a day trip from Rome. It can also be visited fro the Amalfi Coast, or on the way to the Amalfi Coast.

From Naples

By Train: The Circumvesuviana train runs from Naples to the Amalfi Coast and stops in Pompeii. It runs regularly, but tends to be very crowded, especially if you have luggage!

By Tour: If you don’t want to deal with public transport you can take a tour from Naples to Pompeii like this.

By Car: You could rent a car and drive, although I generally don’t recommend driving in the Naples/Pompeii/Amalfi Coast area.

From Rome

By Train: You’ll want to take the train to Naples and then grab the local train. The local train is the Circumvesuviana train that runs from Naples to the Amalfi Coast and stops in Pompeii.

By Tour: This day tour is a great option, it takes you from Rome to Pompeii with a visit to Mt. Vesuvius (the infamous volcano that led to Pompeii)

From the Amalfi Coast

By Train: The Circumvesuviana train runs from the Amalfi Coast to Naples and stops in Pompeii. It runs regularly, but tends to be very crowded, especially if you have luggage!

Tickets & Tours

You’ll need to purchase a ticket to enter Pompeii. There are also guided tour options, or headsets that can be rented so an audio tour can be played at each stop through Pompeii.

I found the headset audio tours useful and interesting, but you can also explore without it.

Tickets and details can be found here.

How to Long to Spend in Pompeii

Pompeii is huge and you could easily spend an entire day (or two) wandering around. Whilte it’s too much to see everything in a few hours, you can hit the must-see spots and get a good feel of the place!
