Mountains, lakes, fairytale towns, charming Chritmas markets, comfort food, the world capitol of classical music – Austria is one of Europe’s more underrated countries in my opinon!

I’ve explore Austria’s epic Tyrol region, where Innsbruck quickly became my favorite mountain town. The lake region with instagrammable Hallstatt, and other lesser known hot spots! I spent last December visitng the Christmas markets in post-card like Sazlburg & ornate Vienna, Austria’s capitol.

I’ve traveled Austria solo several times, visitng larger cities like Vienna, and more remote towns like Hallstatt. I’ve never felt unsafe in Austria & have generally found it a welcoming country for solo travelers!

Cost & Currency

Austria uses the Euro. Credit cards were accepted everywhere I traveled, so it wasn’t necessary to have too much cash on you (one exception is the Christmas Markets, which are generally cash only!)

I found Austria generally pretty reasonably priced, and significantly cheaper than Switzerland. If you want the mountain views without the prices Austria is a great alternative! Nicer hotels will cost around $150 a night, potentially a bit more. Food & drinks were also reasonable.

When to Visit Autria

Austria is lovely in every season! Winter is my personal favorite with snowcapped mountains, skiing & Christmas markets. Summer is peak season for the lakes region and for hiking enthusiasts in the Alps. Spring & Fall offer better shoulder season pricing and fewer crowds. Spring can be a bit rainy, so I’d opt for fall to see the foliage and still enjoy some hiking with a bit chillier temps!

Getting Around Austria

Austria, like many countries in Europe, has an excellent rail system. It’s very easy to get around Austria using the trains. All major cities are connected & have high speed trains running many times a day. Even getting to more remote places is possible via trains & busses.

You may want to consider renting a car if you’re visiting one of the more remote regions, like the lakes or mountains and want a bit more flexibility than the public transit schedule allows!
