Vienna Travel Guide
Posh Vienna is filled with Baroque palaces and every area of the city drips with grandeur & old-world elegance. It’s infamous cafe culture is unmatched & you’ll never tire of the schnitzel & strudel you can find in almost every restaurant. Operas, ballrooms, stunning palaces make this picturesque city feel infinitely more chic than the charming mountain towns like Salzburg, Innsbruck & Hallstatt that fill the rest of most Austrian itineraries.
I’ve visited Vienna in both the winter as part of my Christmas Markets tour (they have one of the most famous Christmas Markets in the world) and also in the summer as part of a post-college backpacking trip many years previously. I enjoyed it both times!

Restaurant Limón – Mediterranes Rooftop Restaurant & Bar in Wien
The stunning rooftop restaurant on the roof of the Hotel Grand Ferdinand Vienna offers some of the most beautiful sunset views over St. Stephen’s Cathedral and the Vinna skyline beyond.
The inside of the restautant also offers a stunning aesthetic and feels like stepping back in time to a Gatsby-era restaurant. I’d recommend a reservation, especially around sunset!
Das LOFT Sky Bar
If you’re willing to venture a bit, . Das LOFT Sky Bar is absolutely stunning and has some of the most unreal rooftop views. The interior is also insanely beautiful.

Where to Stay in Vienna
Hotel Grand Ferdinand
Vienna is a massive city and it can be a bit overhwelming to decide where to stay. For visiting the highlights of the city or Christmas Markets I highly recomend staying in the Innere Stadt or 1st District. This is the historic City Center of Vienna, and is where the majority of tourist attractions & the most famous Christmas Markets are located.
I stayed at the Hotel Grand Ferdinand located right in the city center and could not recommend it enough! It was walkable to the main Christmas Market at Rathausplatz, Maria-Theresien-Platz, Karlsplatz, Stephensplatz, Am Hof & more. These are also some of the most famous spots to visit not at Christmas!
The hotel also had a rooftop restaurant and bar where they served a stunning breakfast with views over the Viennese skyline.
Best Things to do in Vienna
Vienna Opera House
The stunning Vienna Opera House is a can’t miss experience, but the cost to see an opera or ballet can be super high! If you’d like to visit, but don’t want to spend tons of money you can try to buy standing room only spots. The day of starting at 10AM they release these tickets online. They sell out quickly, so check right at 10!
Experience Viennese Cafe Culture at Some of the Cities Most Stunning Cafes
Viennese Cafe Culture is something you must experience! Find one of the cities most stunning, lavish cafes and purchase an (admittedly expensive) coffee and some streudel, and enjoy a relaxed few hours in one of these historic spots.
Café Central is the most famous and well known, but some other good options are Cafe Mozart & Cafe Konditorei. Also the cafe inside of the Kunsthistorisches – Art History Museum is one of the most stunning in Vienna, you’ll need to visit the museum to visit the cafe!
Walking Tour of Innere Stadt
Vienna’s Innere Stadt (or Inner District) is the main tourist area of Vienna. It’s also called District 1. Many of the highlights you’ll want to see are in this area and can be walked to from one another!
- St. Stephen’s Cathedral
- Column of Pest
- Rathausplatz
- Vienna State Opera
- Maria-Theresien-Platz
- Hofburg Palace + Burggarten & Volksgarten
Visit Vienna’s Palaces
Vienna is home to several stunning palaces. Depending on how much time you have you can visit the 3 most famous. If you’re short on time and can only visit one Schönbrunn is rhe most stunning, followed by Belvedere, but Hofburg is the most conveniently located!
Hofburg
The easiest to visit as it’s right in the Innere Stadt. To go inside you’ll need to do a guided tour, but you can explore the outside and the gardens without a tour (which would be my recommendation) If you do want to visit inside purchase tickets in advance!
Belvedere
Belvedere is worth visiting just to admire the grounds and the outside (neither of which require a ticket) If you want to visit the museum inside you’ll need to buy a ticket. I liked this guided tour.
Schönbrunn
Potentially the most stuning of the 3, but the farther from the main District 1 area of Vienna, so you’ll need to take public transport or a taxi.
You can visit certain areas of the outside for free, but to see the more impressive parts of the gardens and the inside of the palace. This guided tour brings you through both.

Getting to Vienna
By Train
Vienna is super convenient to get to via train. The main train station is connected to all other major cities in Austria & many major European cities.
- Innsbruck to Vienna– 4 hours 15 minutes direct
- Salzburg to VIenna – 2 hours 30 minutes direct
- Prague to Vienna – 4 hours direct
- Budapest to Vienna – 2 hours 25 minutes direct
By Plane
Vienna also has an international airport. It’s Austria’s largest airport and only about 20 minutes from the city center, making it super convenient to fly into Vienna as well!
How Many Days to Spend in Vienna
2-3 Days
Vienna is fairly large and there is a lot to see, you can easily spend 3 full days, especially if you’d like to visit a museum and the inside of 2 or 3 of the main palaces. With two busy days you could see the highlights and then explore other areas of Vienna. I’d personally prefer to spend shorter time in Vienna and more in the stunning mountain towns of Salzburg, Innsbruck & Hallstatt, but it depends on what you’re looking for!

Safety for Solo Female Travel in Vienna
4.5 out of 5
I felt incredibly safe in Vienna traveling solo. It is a big city, so it’s always good to be concious of your surroundings and pay attention to how safe you feel in any given area, I was mostly in the touristy city center and felt totally comfortable, even late at night. Austria was super safe for solo travel in general in my experience!
