Hallstatt is one of Austria’s most charming destinations, and I was so enamored with it when I visited. This picturesque lakeside town is ultra-touristy and packed during any season. It can be hard to find great restaurants in places that are so overrun with tourists, and prices tend to be high. Hallstatt definitely has some tourist trap locations, but there are also some good spots.
I spent longer than most people in Hallstatt, I worked remotely from there for a few days, most people visit as a day trip or spend 1 night, which is plenty. BUT since I had some extra time it allowed me to try the local restaurant scene! I’ve compiled my list of favorites: best overall, best casual spots for a quick bite, best views, some of these spots are worth it for the views even if the food is only ok!

Best Restaurants with Views Hallstatt
Rudolfsturm
currently closed for renovations, see more details here on timing of reopening!
Located at the top of the funicular high above Hallstatt, Rudolfsturm has some of the best panoramic views over Hallstatt, the lake and the mountains beyond. This spot has decent food but is worth it for the views alone!
They also serve mostly traditional Austrian food like schnitzel, goulash, streudel, etc!
Seehotel Grüner Baum
For a meal with a view closer to Old Town Hallstatt, I highly recommend the terrace at Seehotel Grüner Baum. Their terrace has some of the best views in Hallstatt. Their menu features fresh fish, pastas and more!

Brauhaus
Traditional Austrian food with a stunning lakeside patio. It’s a bit pricy, but you’re paying for the location and the view!
Schirmbar Hallstatt (Umbrella Bar Hallstatt)
A casual lakeside spot for traditional meals like schnitzel, streudels and other Austrian classics. Like most other places in Hallstatt, it’s pricy (the price you pay for visiting a tourist town!) the lakeside patio views are worth it though! Also, they stay open a bit later than other places nearby. Cash only!

Best Traditional Austrian Restaurants Hallstatt
Heritage Hotel Restaurant Seeauer
I stayed at the Heritage Hotel and ate at this restaurant twice. The food was delicious both meals, I loved the schnitzel! I’m surpried the reviews are so low, although I guess that’s because of how many people they had to turn away when I was there!

Zum Bader Gastwirtschaft
One of the most popular spots in Hallstatt, this is a classic Austrian restaurants and one of the best places to grab dinner in Hallstatt.

Best Casual Restaurants Hallstatt
Muk´s Schmankerl
For a casual pizza spot with solid food head to Muk´s Schmankerl! They serve fresh, yummy pizzas on paper plates. Also a good place to grab a lakeside gelato!
Die Gemischtwarenhandlung
Casual coffeehouse right where the ferry docks in Hallstatt. This is one of the only places you’ll find open mid-afternoon. They have casual bites- like sandwiches and small pizzas, toasts. It’s not a bad spot if you’re in a rush or don’t want to pay the high Hallstatt prices for a sit down meal.

Burgerman The Station
A super casual food truck-style restaurants serving burgers, fries and other snacks. They have a bunch of picnic tables outside for you to eat. If you want a quick bite or are having a hard time gettting a table at a restaurant this is a great option!
