One Day in Helsinki: The Perfect Itinerary

Helsinki is Finland’s beautiful, walkable Nordic capital — and if you’re passing through on your way to or from Lapland, it’s absolutely worth tacking on a day. It’s understated, peaceful, and filled with cozy cafes, stunning saunas, and great food right on the Baltic Sea. I spent a day in Helsinki on my way to Lapland and was so happy I did!

South Harbor Helsinki Finland

Where to Stay in Helsinki

For a one-day visit, location is everything. My top recommendation is Hotel Haven — right on the south harbor in the heart of Helsinki, walking distance from all the highlights in this itinerary. It’s a beautiful hotel in the best possible spot.

If you’re on a tighter connection or prefer airport convenience, the Hilton Helsinki Airport is walkable from the terminal and has a sauna, bar, and restaurant on-site. Downtown is just 30 minutes by train (trains run every 10 minutes, 4 euro each way) — totally manageable for a day trip into the city. I stayed here and it was perfect for catching my early morning flight to Lapland.

Morning

South Harbor, Esplanadi & Senate Square

Start your morning in the South Harbor and Esplanadi area — Helsinki’s most picturesque neighborhood. Esplanadi is a long, tree-lined street filled with great cafes, shopping, and one of Helsinki’s lovely public parks. Grab a coffee and wander down toward the harbor — the whole area is incredibly walkable and beautiful in the morning light.

From there, make your way to Senate Square — Helsinki’s oldest central area and home to the iconic Helsinki Cathedral. The Neoclassical architecture here is stunning and very photogenic. Just a short walk away is Uspenski Cathedral, an impressive hilltop Russian Orthodox church that’s well worth a quick stop for the views alone.

Löyly Sauna Helsinki Finland

Afternoon

Löyly Sauna

Visiting a sauna in Finland is an absolute must — and Löyly is the most stunning one in Helsinki. Voted one of the greatest places in the world by Time Magazine, it features a series of indoor and outdoor saunas with jaw-dropping views of the Helsinki skyline and the Baltic Sea. It’s an experience unlike anything else.

Tickets are 27 euro for a 2-hour pass to all the saunas. Book in advance — these sell out, especially on weekends. After your sauna session, Löyly has a great bar and restaurant with a stunning outdoor terrace. Grab lunch or a drink here before heading into the evening. Book tickets here.

Tip: Book an afternoon slot so you flow naturally from the sauna into sunset drinks — Löyly is about a 10-minute Uber from South Harbor.

Allas Helsinki Finland

Evening

Allas & Dinner on the Harbor

Head back toward South Harbor for rooftop drinks at Allas — an outdoor pool and rooftop bar/restaurant overlooking the harbor. You don’t need to use the pool; just head to the rooftop deck for drinks with some of the best views in the city. This is especially stunning at sunset with the harbor and Helsinki skyline spread out below you.

Finish the evening with dinner in the South Harbor or Esplanadi area — there are plenty of great restaurant options all within easy walking distance of each other and of Hotel Haven. tried Gastrogrill Muré known for serving some of the best beef in Finland. The steak was exceptional and the mac & cheese has stayed in my mind ever since.
