I stopped in Zurich during Christmas last year, and had some time to explore the charming Christmas Markets spread throughout the city, particularly in the charming Old Town. Zurich was my last stop on the way home after a week exploring the Christmas Markets of Alsace, France & Basel, Switzerland. While I preferred Basel for a Swiss Christmas Market stop, Zurich is still worth a visit if you’re in the area!

Zurich has charming Christmas Markets spread throughout the downtown area!
- Old Town Market Dörfli
- Münsterhof Christmas Market
- “Wienachtsdorf” Christmas Village
- Bahnhofstrasse Lights
- Singing Christmas Tree

Old Town Market ‘Dörfli’
The charming ‘Dörfli’ market spans a lot of the Old Town area surrounding Grossmünster. The cute red chalets featuring racelettes, fresh fries, mulled wine & more line the streets and squres around this area. Don’t miss Münstergasse & Zwingliplatz

Münsterhof Christmas Market
Across the bridge from the ‘Dörfli’ Across the bridge from the ‘Dörfli’ market you’ll find the Münsterhof Christmas Market. This cute Christmas Market is set under the imposing Fraumünster church, and features a few stalls, a cozy champagne bar, Christmas tree & more.

“Wienachtsdorf” Christmas Village
Zurich’s biggest market is the “Wienachtsdorf” Christmas Village located right in front of the Opera House in Sechseläutenplatz along Lake Zurich. This was my favorite market!

Bahnhofstrasse Lights
Not a market per se, but the stunning Lucy lights on Bahnhofstrasse, Zurich’s main shopping street, are a can’t miss. These pretty twinkle lights span the length and width of the whole street and are magic at night, especially in the snow. Lucy comes from “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” the Beatles song

Singing Christmas Tree & Werdmühleplatz
At Werdmühleplatz Market you’ll find one of Zurich’s most unique Christmas features. A large wooden stand shaped like a Christmas tree where you’ll see choir performances throughout all of December!

Zurich HB Market
If you’re arriving via train t Zurich you can’t miss this market. The entire lobby of Zurich HB, the main train station, is a Christmas Market. There’s also stalls in the square right outside of the station. This was fun to visit when I was leaving Zurich, I got there a few hours early to explore!
Illuminarium
The coutryard of the Swiss National Museum turns into a light show at this time of year. This spot is a vibe, at night it’s geared towards adults with DJs playing and drinks being served!

Getting to Zurich
By Train
Switzerland has a great train system and is connected to all other major cities in Switzerland by rail
- Bern –> Zurich 1 hour
- Lucerne –> Zurich 40 minutes
- Interlaken –> Zurich 2 hours
By Plane
Zurich also has an international airport. The airport is located about 20 minutes via train from downtown Zurich. Trains between Zurich’s HB (main station) and the airport run regularly, just look for any train that has a stop at Flughafen

Zurich Christmas Market Overall Rating
15 of 15
While I love Zurich, I visited other Christmas Markets I was more impressed with. Not to say that Zurich’s aren’t beautiful, there were just a LOT of really impressive markets across the 8 coutnries I’ve visited. The highlight of Zurich was definitely the Lucy lights on the Bahnhofstrasse, it’s so charming at night, and if you happen to be lucky enough to catch it in the snow it’s magical!
