Strasbourg Christmas Market Locations & Map
The entire Old Town of Strasbourg goes all out for Christmas. There are 8 markets in this area, but you’ll also find streets nearby major markets fully decked out for Christmas and random Christmas market stalls all throughout the city. Here’s an overview of each Market. They’re all in a fairly condensed area, so one jam packed day or 2 slower paced days give you plenty of time to see everything!
Strasbourg Christmas Markets
- Place de la Cathédrale – Traditional Market
- Place Kléber – Traditional Market & Christmas Tree
- Place Broglie – Historic Chrìstkìndelsmärik
- Place du Marché aux Poissons – Gourmet Foods Christmas Market
- Place Saint-Thomas & Place Benjaim Zix – La Petite France Traditional Markets
- Square Louise-Weiss – Local Christmas Market
- Marché OFF – Sustainable Local Goods

Place de la Cathédrale – Traditional Market
Strasbourg’s Cathedral is so incredibly stunning (coming from someone who does not go to church ever) the building itself is just an absolute marvel. The whole plaza and streets around the Cathedral make up one of Strasbourg’s best Christmas Markets. This traditional market has stalls serving warming vin chaud, tons of snacks, selling Christmas goods and more! This area is a can’t miss in Strasbourg and was one of my favorite markets! You have to visit at night! There’s also a carousel, and the carousel in front of the cathedral at night is so beautiful.
While you’re in this area check out the Teddy Bear House, Place des Tripiers, the Christmas Market gate & all the other instagrammable spots noted in the photo spots section on the map above! They’re all right around the cathedral.

Place Kléber – Traditional Market & Christmas Tree
Another can’t miss spot is the traditional market at Place Kléber, this is one of the biggest markets and home to the largest and most impressive Christmas tree. This square is one of the main squares in Strasbourg and in part of the most modern area of the city. This spot is great to visit at night when the tree is lit up!

Place Broglie – Historic Chrìstkìndelsmärik
The oldest of Strasbourg’s christmas markets is the Historic Chrìstkìndelsmärik, which is now located in Place Broglie. I recommend visiting during the day and sampling the many different flavors of Alsace. This markets had some of the most traditional food options, and tons of souvenirs stalls to explore while you enjoy your food.

Place du Marché aux Poissons – Gourmet Foods Christmas Market
Not far from the cathedral is Strasbourg’s gourmet foods market. This smaller market is worth a stop and has lovely views over the river. It’s small and can be explored quickly. The few stalls feature gourmet cheeses, wines and desserts.

Place Saint-Thomas & Place Benjaim Zix – La Petite France Traditional Markets
La Petite France is the most charming and picturesque neighborhood of Strasbourg. Wandering among the half-timbered houses, along canals and across bridges feels like stepping back in time or into a storybook. This area has two small Christmas markets that are worth a stop. There is one in Place Saint-Thomas & one in Place Benjaim Zix. They’re quite small, but a nice place to grab a vin chaud and relax in a postcard setting.

Square Louise-Weiss – Local Christmas Market
Square Louise-Weiss is home to a small local Christmas market featuring stalls with locally made jams, cookies, biscuits and more! This market also features a stage with performances and shows for children throughout the month of December.

Marché OFF – Sustainable Local Goods
Marché OFF is a unique market selling local sustainable goods. It’s aesthetic is the opposite of all the other traditional markets with wooden stalls and decorations. The stalls are housed in shipping-style metal trailers. This is a unique spot and seemed to be a local hang for some of the younger students in Strasbourg during my trip!

What to Eat at Strasbourg Christmas Markets
Strasbourg has tons of great food – it’s hearty, savory & perfect for warming up on cool days when exploring Christmas Markets.
- Tarte Flambée – similar to a flatbread pizza, the traditional topping are cheese, cream and ham/bacon, but you can get different varieties
- Choucroute – Sauerkraut topped with various sausages and meats
- Galette de Pomme de Terre – potatoe pancakes topped with cheese!
- Bredele – fun shaped Christmas biscuits coming in various flavors – vanilla, almond, cinammon, chocolate, etc. Buy a mixed bag!
- Mannele – butter brioche cookies shaped like little humans!
- Alsace Wine – Alsace is a famous wine region and it’s defintely worth tasting some local wines while visiting!
- Vin Chaud – Also known as mulled wine, this is a must try at any Christmas Market!

Tips for Visiting Strasbourg Christmas Markets
- Strasbourg is big, but it still gets crowded, exploring early in the morning gives you more space to move around and take pictures – but night is a VIBE
- Most places accepted card, but it’s good to have cash just in case and for smaller purchases
- The cups that mulled wine/vin chaud are served in are reusable. You pay a 1-2 euro deposit for a cup, you can return it at any stall and get money back or you can keep it as a souvenir!
- You can see Strasbourrg in one day if you have to, but 2 would be better. It’s also a good place to base yourself for exploring the many storybook towns of Alsace!
- There are tons of great photo spots outside of the markets in Strasbourg – see some of my favorites on the map above!

Other Alsace Christmas Markets Near Strasbourg
Alsace is the perfect region for exploring several markets nearby without having to travel too far. This region is home to a series of picturesque towns and larger cities that feature excellent Christmas Markets. You can choose to rent a car, although you’ll have to figure out parking it does offer more flexibility. I opted to take trains and ubers (which were easily acessible) around this region. See my Alsace Christmas Market Itinerary here!
- Colmar – Colmar is the most famous of the small towns in Alsace near Strasbourg, and it really does feel like stepping into a postcard. This small town is so worth a visit, it’s stunning furing Christmas. The crowds do get crazy so get there early and avoid weekends if you can. It’s an hour by car or by direct train! See my full Colmar Christmas Market Guide.
- Obernai – Obernai had some of my favorite markets. This town is a bit bigger than the other small towns nearby, but smaller than Colmar or Strasbourg. This was one of the prettiest places I visited. I’d spend at least a half day there as you need a bit more time to really explore. It’s a 25 minute drive or a 40 minute train from Strasbourg
- Riquewihr – my favorite of the many picturesque towns in Alsace, charming Riquewihr is a 50 minute drive from Strasbourg and is worth spending a few hours to half day visiting. I recommend combining it with a stop in Ribeauvillé (see below)
- Ribeauvillé – 10 minutes from Riquewihr is the equally charming Ribeauvillé. This tiny town can also be explored very quickly, but is so worth a stop.
- Eguisheim – another small picturesque town a one hour drive from Strasbourg is Eguisheim. I recommend taking a morning to explore this small postcard town before the crowds! It can also be combined with a trip to Colmar, which is only 12 minutes away.
- Mulhouse – Mulhouse was truthfully my least favorite of the bunch as I found the town the least picturesque, but it can be worth a stop if you have extra time!
- Basel, Switzerland – I absolutely LOVED Basel, and it was the perfect stop for me as I was flying home from Zurich. Basel is only an hour and 20 minutes via train from Strasbourg. I highly recommend stopping here if you have time!

Where to Stay in Strasbourg
I recommend staying in Old Town Strasbourg for sure on your Christmas Market trip – this is where all the highlights are! And the Old Town itself is fairly large, so there’s tons of options! My favorite neighborhood of Old Town is Petite France, so I’d stay there again if given the chance!
Pavillon REGENT PETITE France
A stunning spot right in the heart of Petite France along the canals, this hotel is my top recommendation in Strasbourg if you can snag a room!

Hôtel Gutenberg
Another great area in Old Town to stay is closer to the Cathedral, this hotel is in a great location near the Cathedral and the stunning streets around the Cathedral. It can be a bit cheaper than staying directly in Petite France.

Getting to Strasbourg
Flying
Strasbourg has an international airport. It’s a 20 minute drive from Old Town Strasbourg, alternatively you can get downtown via train in under 40 minutes! View flights.
By Train or Car
Strasbourg is connected to the rest of Alsace & Basel, Switzerland via one trainline. The train runs regularly and makes it really easy to get around the region. You could also rent a car, but I found getting around with trains/Uber to be totally fine and removed the hassle or renting a car and figuring out parking!.For getting around Strasbourg you don’t need a car/many areas would be difficult to drive. View train times!

Strasbourg Christmas Market Overall Rating

Strasbourg had a lot of hype (thanks Insta) and it did live up! The city itself is stunning and so worth a visit, and there’s tons of Christmas magic to explore. One of the things that makes it so high on my list is the ability to combine it with a trip to other stunnning Christmas Markets in the rest of Alsace & even Basel, Switzerland if you have enough time. If you’re looking for a great place to visit to experience all the Christmas vibes, try Strasbourg + Alsace
