If you only see one Christmas market in Europe, ma If you only see one Christmas market in Europe, make it Dresden, trust me🎄 I’ve been to 18 Christmas markets across Europe, and Dresden is my #1. Every inch of the main Striezelmarkt is dripping with Christmas cheer: a giant tree, a Christmas tower, a ferris wheel and hundreds of decorated stalls. I spent hours wandering and still wanted more time. How to do it: ✨ Striezelmarkt: start here when it opens, then come back after dark. It’s magic at night 🏰 Stallhof: a medieval Christmas market inside the Dresden Castle walls, complete with a hot tub you can book to soak in with a drink (although I don’t recommend 🤣) ⛪ Neumarkt & Frauenkirche: handmade gifts on one of Dresden’s prettiest squares, plus a Christmas tower where Santa visits daily 🕯️ Taschenbergpalais: “the romantic market,” small and quiet, right next to Striezelmarkt, loved it here 🌍 Augustusmarkt: an international market across the river in the New Town, best at dusk 🥨 Eat: Christstollen, Rahmklecks, baked apples, Käsespätzle and a German hot chocolate (worth the line) 💶 Bring cash. Each stall has its own mug, so return yours where you got it for the deposit 📅 Striezelmarkt runs Nov 25 – Dec 24, 2026. Of the 18 Christmas markets I’ve visited in Europe Of the 18 Christmas markets I’ve visited in Europe, Salzburg is the prettiest ❄️ It snowed my entire first day here, and the next morning the sun came out over a perfect blanket of snow. The whole city felt like a snow globe. It’s the most picturesque market I’ve seen, with the most stunning backdrop. How to see it: 🎄 Christkindlmarkt: the main market spreads across Domplatz and Residenzplatz, with garland and white lights strung over hundreds of stalls. There’s an ice rink in Mozartplatz 🏰 Fortress Hohensalzburg: take the funicular up for Glühwein with a 360° view over the city. The courtyard market is weekends only 🍺 Sternbräu: a beer garden turned Christmas market, with fur blankets to wrap up in. Go at night 🌟 Mirabellplatz: smaller and more local, and a good stop for a nightcap on the way back to your hotel 🥨 Eat: pretzels, Kaiserschmarrn, Bosna (Salzburg’s sausage sandwich), Mozart balls, and a build-your-own baked potato 💶 Bring cash, and keep your Glühwein mug as a souvenir or return it for the deposit 📅 The main market runs Nov 19, 2026 – Jan 1, 2027. POV: it’s snowing at the Innsbruck Christmas marke POV: it’s snowing at the Innsbruck Christmas markets at night & you’ve never been so cozy❄️ Innsbruck is my favorite place in Austria, and in winter it really does feel like a postcard. It gets overshadowed by Vienna and Salzburg, but this little city has 6 Christmas markets and the Alps in every direction. What to know before you go: 🎄 Old Town market: stalls winding through the old streets under the Golden Roof. Try a Kiachl, a hot donut filled with sauerkraut or fruit ✨ Walk down Kiebachgasse, lined with lights and fairytale characters 🛍️ Maria-Theresien-Straße: a more modern market on the main shopping street, with international food 🎠 Marktplatz: the liveliest market, right by the river, and where everyone ends up for Glühwein at night 🚡 Hungerburg: take the funicular up for Glühwein with a view over the city and the Alps. Go at sunset 💶 Bring cash. Most stalls are cash only, and you get your mug deposit back when you return it (or keep it as a souvenir) 📅 The Old Town and Marktplatz markets run Nov 15 – Dec 23 this year 🚆 It’s under 2 hours by direct train from Salzburg, so it’s easy to add on 📍 Innsbruck, Austria Comment INNSBRUCK and I’ll send you my full Innsbruck Christmas market guide.
