Hungary Travel Guide

Hungary is home to one of my absolute favorite cities in Europe, Budapest. Budapest is stunning, lively, and honesly, just cool. It’s one of the chicest cities in Europe and everything about Budapest feels effortlessly cool. It’s the perfect long weekend city break with your friends, or significany other. While I haven’t had a chance to explore Hungary outside of Budapest yet, it’s on my list!

Safety for Solo Female Travel

4 out of 5

Hungary is safe for solo femaie travel, particularly Budapest. I spent most of my time in Budapest but I traveled via train through Hungary from Vienna and then through Hungary to Prague and felt completely safe both times!

Cost & Currency

Hungary is not on the Euro they use the Hungarian Forint. The conversion can be a bit confusing, but google helps simplify it. $10 USD is 3675 Forint as I’m writing this in March 2025. This can make prices look really high in Forint, but overall Budapest and Hungary are cheap compared to Eastern European cities.

Budapest, like Prague, is becoming more popular with tourists, so hotel and other prices are starting to rise, but it’s still an affordable destination compared to similar big cities like Paris and London.

Tipping & Restaurants

Tipping is a bit of a mixed bag in Hungary depending on what you read or who you ask. Generally, 10-15% is safe, sometimes a service charge will already be added to the bill – in this case you could tip 5-10% still just to be safe (this is what I did)

Like most European countries, usually there is no prompt to tip on a card, so you’ll need cash to tip.

When to Visit Hungary

I absolutely loved visiting Hungary in the spring (April & May). The weather was mild in early May, and the crowds & prices were still lower than peak season. Budapest wsas stunning in the spring. Fall (Sept, Oct) is another great option for shoulder season pricing and lesser crowds with pleasant weather.

Summer (June, July & August) are peak season, and you’ll find the warmest temperatures, but also the highest prices and most crowds!

Budapest is one of the most popular Christmas markets in Europe, making November & December a popular time to visit. It’s cold, but so festive. I loved Budapest in the snow.

Jan-Mar can be pretty cold and dreary, but if you’re looking for the cheapest options this is your best bet!

Getting Around Hungary

Train is the best way to travel between the major cities in the Hungary, it’s well connected to the rest of Europe and generally fairly cost effective.
